SAR: Sexual Attitude Reassessment

Take the time to Really LOOK at sexual behavior!

Sexuality is one of the most basic aspects of life, yet it’s one of the hardest topics to discuss.  PPNNE’s SAR (Sexual Attitude Reassessment) is an intensive three-day workshop that gives you the opportunity to explore your own attitudes, values and beliefs about sexual behavior in a safe, comfortable and nonjudgmental environment.  The SAR uses emotionally evocative and sexually explicit films and presentations to explore personal attitudes and values.  Participants share their feelings and reactions in supportive small group sessions.  The SAR is designed to promote open, honest self-awareness for anyone who deals with sexuality issues in the work life.  Topics to be explored include: body image; aging; disability; sexual orientation; masturbation; and language, myths and stereotypes.  As a result of the SAR, you’ll be more comfortable, confident and competent when working with clients or students.

As a participant at the SAR, you will:

·         See and study your own reactions.

Learn to recognize the way you respond to sexual behaviors, images, thoughts, and feelings, and see how other people develop sexual attitudes and values.

·         Understand sexual diversity.

See the complexity of human sexuality and examine the diversity of human sexual expression and experience.

·         Learn how to communicate about sexuality.

Examine issues involved in effective communication, particularly in the context of understanding sexual behavior and expression.

·         Learn to view sexuality more objectively.

Understand the impact the sexual attitudes have on personal relationships and on providing educational, health and social services.

Sexuality and Developmental Disabilities: Working One on One

People with developmental disabilities are often left out of the conversation about sexuality, almost as if they are incapable of having thoughts, feelings, and needs. In reality, they, too, are sexual beings who need information and skills for making healthy decisions about sexuality. As someone who works with people with developmental disabilities, you may be the most likely person to discuss sexuality with them, or someone with a developmental disability may approach you with questions about sexuality.  PPNNE Educator/Trainer Katherine McLaughlin will help you become more comfortable talking about this sensitive topic by giving you ideas about what needs to be taught when and how to help people with developmental disabilities have safe and
satisfying relationships.

PARTICIPANTS WILL:
* Gain knowledge about sexuality and specific  issues for people with developmental disabilities, including appropriate/inappropriate behaviors, sexual abuse prevention, reproductive health, and relationship and communication skills.
* Understand their own values and attitudes around sexuality and how these values and attitudes may affect their ability to discuss this topic with people with developmental disabilities.
* Explore ways to communicate about sexuality with people with developmental disabilities.

This training is specifically geared toward people who work at developmental disability agencies and/or anyone interested in tackling the topic of sexuality with youth who have developmental disabilities.

Generation Gap: Recognizing and Accommodating Our Differences

With each generation, we become further removed from the youth with whom we work. It is not uncommon to hear adults say they have a hard time understanding youth today. You hear it all the time. "They" don’t work hard... "They" expect it to be easy. "They" are so judgmental. What do "they" mean by that expression? More and more there is less and less harmony inside our classrooms, offi ces, clinics and other workplaces. One of the key facts is the disconnect between Boomers, Gen X’ers, and Gen Y’ers. It is not just age that separates us, but each generation is shaped by the climate and events of its time. Certain settings can also cre ate struggles within the generations as everyone one uses different teaching, learning, marketing and outreach techniques. Through a dynamic and energetic presentation, Pamela Cox Otto illuminates how and why this is and unlocks the secrets of how to relate to one another despite genera tional differences.

PARTICIPANTS WILL:
* Understand what each generation requires in work settings.
* Understand what the key areas of confl ict are when working with youth.
* Understand how to create a environment that accommodates differences while getting the job done.
* Find the areas of agreement between the generations so that we can ‘all get along.’

This training is geared towards all school and college personnel, counselors, therapists, health care personnel and administrators, legislators, clergy and any other youth-serving professionals interested in the generational divide when it comes to working with youth.
