FAQ's

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SUPPORTING PPNNE

Q. Are donations to Planned Parenthood of Northern New England tax deductible?

A.  Yes, all donations to Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) are tax deductible according to IRS standards. If you'd like to make a donation to PPNNE, please click here to make a secure online gift, or here to learn about other ways to give.

Q. Does Planned Parenthood receive federal money? State funding? Support from foundations and corporations?

A.  PPNNE does receive state and federal funding to support our medical services and education programs. The cost of the care we provide exceeds the amount of funding we receive which is why we depend on private support from individuals and foundations. In fact, approximately $5 million in health care is subsidized annually at PPNNE through our sliding fee scales for teens and those in low income brackets. That does not include the additional costs of providing education and training and outreach programs across our region and abroad. Of the private funding that we receive approximately 20% comes from foundations. Q. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, The Family Planning Association of Maine -- What's the difference?

A.  Think of us as a family tree with different branches and leaves -- some serving different purposes and some doing similar things in different places. What we share is that we are all working for the reproductive and sexual health and rights of women, men, and teens.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) is one of 130 Planned Parenthoods in the USA, each affiliated with Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), the national umbrella organization which provides technical assistance, national advocacy, and leadership to the family planning movement.

PPFA is the U.S. affiliate of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and is part of a worldwide network of Planned Parenthoods.

Each of these Planned Parenthood organizations raises funds separately from the other.

In Maine, the Family Planning Association of Maine (Maine FPA) provides technical assistance, statewide lobbying, performs grants management functions, trains physicians to provide abortions, and provides family planning services in Augusta.

The key difference between PPNNE, PPFA, IPPF, and Maine FPA is that PPNNE provides direct medical, educational, and advocacy services in New Hampshire, southern Maine, and Vermont.

They are all separate organizations and must raise funds independently -- which is why you may receive mailings and phone calls from all of them.

Q. Can I make a donation to PPNNE through the United Way?

A.  PPNNE is a member agency of The United Way of Greater Manchester in New Hampshire, The United Way of Mid-Coast Maine, and The United Way of York County, Maine. We are an affiliate for "designation only" with The United Way of Greater Portland, Maine. To ensure that PPNNE receives your donation, simply write our name and address on the back of any United Way pledge form in the space marked "Specific Care".

Q. How can I have my gift matched by my employer?

A.  There are a number of organizations who will match an employee's gift to selected charities. Check with your employer's Human Resources staff or Personnel Director to find out if they have a matching gift program. After making a donation, you can send your matching gift form to one of our program support departments.

Q. How do I designate PPNNE in my will?

A.  A gift through your will is a wonderful way to continue your charitable desires. If you would like to leave a gift for PPNNE in your will, you may make a specific or residuary bequest to Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, Inc. As with any planned gift, talk with your attorney or financial advisor to see what will best suit your wishes.  Feel free to contact one of our program support departments with any questions, or more information.

Q.  Is there a monthly giving program at PPNNE?

A.  PPNNE does have a convenient and cost-effective giving option called the Sustainer Program.  The Sustainer Program allows donors to give through credit card or electronic funds transfer, on a monthly or quarterly giving schedule.  These schedules can be for one year (through December) or can be continuous until you tell us to stop.   To find out more about the Sustainer Program, contact the Program Support Department nearest you, or click here for a printable enrollment form.

Q. Can I restrict my gift?

A.  While we need to raise funds for all of our programs, it is possible to restrict your gift to a particular health center or program. Please contact the Program Support Department nearest you for further information about this option.

Q. If I make a donation, will my name be listed in PPNNE's Annual Report?

A.  New This Year! We are pleased to list ALL donors of $25 or more in PPNNE's 2007 Annual Report (which will be published in Spring, 2008).  In addition, donors of $1,000 or more will be recognized as members of the newly formed Sanger Society.  If you'd like to make a donation to PPNNE, please click here to make a secure online gift, or here to learn about other ways to give.  If you would prefer to remain anonymous in our Annual Report, please let us know at webwizard@ppnne.org.
